SAUSALITO, Calif. —
Shoddy workmanship and corrosion on the 23-year-old pipe has been blamed for the spill that started Tuesday. Officials say a welded plug broke under pressure.
The Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District has hired a crew to surround the hole with a concrete encasement that will be completed by Friday.
Biologists are also being brought in to run tests on what contaminants have been released into the bay.
Last January, two separate spills at a different sewage plant leaked almost 3.5 million gallons of raw and partially treated sewage into the Bay.
