SF Driver Leaves Trail Of Death And Destruction

SAN FRANCISCO —

A suspected drunk driver allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian in a San Francisco neighborhood early Friday and then ended his path of death and destruction by slamming into a concrete planter at a local hospital, authorities said.

Lt. Troy Dangerfield said 23-year-old Jose Jimenez of San Francisco was in custody and will be charged vehicular manslaughter. He also is suspected of driving under the influence.

Authorities said a cab driver called 911 reporting the fatal hit-and-run accident at about 2:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Masonic Avenue, between Golden Gate Avenue and Turk Boulevard.

A 55-year-pedestrian had been struck by the car as they walked in the intersection and the force of the impact left their lifeless body halfway way down the block. The unidentified person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dangerfield said Jimenez left a path of destruction.

“When you have a lot of scenes it takes more time to investigate because you have to put the pieces together,” he said. “There were several accidents that occurred in connection with this (the fatal hit and run).”

Two cars were struck in the 100 block of Shrader. Jimenez then allegedly hit another car and ended up slamming head-on in a planter box at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Jeamelia Thomas was coming onto duty as a nurse at St. Mary’s when she saw Jimenez careen into the hospital’s driveway.

“I saw a car coming in (to the hospital driveway) hitting the corner very hard,” she said, “There were no headlights and no front grill. He was speeding. I tried to dodge him because he was coming head on (at me). He actually ran into the cement pots in front of the hospital.”

Thomas said the police were chasing Jimenez and he got out of the car with his hands up.

“He was very drunk,” she said. “He asked the cops what happened. They were like – ‘What do you mean what happened?’”

The name of the pedestrian was not yet being released, the medical examiner's office, pending notification of next-of-kin.
