SF: Records For 2,400 Medi-Cal Users Breached

SAN FRANCISCO —

Officials say about 2,400 Medi-Cal recipients in San Francisco had their records breached by a former employee at the city's Human Services Agency.

The employee, who has not been identified, allegedly e-mailed the Medi-Cal recipients' names, Social Security numbers and other identifying information to her personal computer, attorneys and union representatives.

Director of the city's Human Services Agency Trent Rhorer tells the San Francisco Examiner the employee is disputing the agency's decision to fire her and wanted the records to bolster her contention that she had a disproportionately high caseload.

Medi-Cal is the state's health insurance program for the poor. Rohrer says the risk of identity theft is very low because the records were not distributed beyond the former employee, her attorneys and union representatives.

Clients who had their records breached will be notified by the agency.
