LIVERMORE, Calif. —

A 16-year-old from Livermore was bitten by a shark while vacationing in Hawaii, and she spoke to KTVU exclusively about her harrowing ordeal.

The gash above her left ankle is stitched up and healing, but 10 days after the fact, it's still obvious where a reef shark sank its teeth into Sage St. Clair.

"That's a tooth mark, and all these are teeth marks," she said as she gestured to her wound.

The 16-year-old was relaxing with her family at Kahana Beach in about 2 or 3 feet of water. It was the first full day of their 10-day Maui vacation.

"I didn't see anything," St. Clair said. "I never saw a shark. No one did. I felt a lot of teeth in my leg, and that's all I felt."

Kim St. Clair, the girl's mother, said all of a sudden the Sage started screaming, and when she looked up, Sage ran out and said something bit her.

Sage said she was scared, but surprisingly, it didn't hurt that much.

"The stitches were the worst part," Sage St. Clair said.

Kim St. Clair said her daughter stayed calm the whole time, even when the crowd around her got excited.

The hours and days after included paramedics, doctors and checkups. The beach was shut down. Her story made the news.

"Everywhere I went downtown, people recognized me," said Sage St. Clair. "I took pictures with people and everyone's like, 'You're a celebrity.'"

Even an encounter with a shark wasn't about to keep Sage St. Clair away from the water. On their final day in Maui, wearing a waterproof boot, Sage got back in the ocean.
