OAKLAND, Calif. —
Redwood Road between Oakland and Castro Valley is popular with cyclists, but becoming notorious for devastating crashes.
A bicyclist was hospitalized and in critical condition after crashing Wednesday night.
The victim reportedly hit a bump while traveling downhill and went airborne, then slammed into the pavement.
The unidentified man in his 60s remains at Highland Hospital with head injuries and he's not expected to survive.
Some cyclists talked to KTVU and said they aren't surprised to hear about the injured cyclist.
"There's a lot of curves, a lot of blind spots, you've got to be careful," a cyclists told KTVU.
Redwood Road isn't the steepest or windiest road in the Bay Area, but it's a workout going up and a fast ride on the way down, which makes the road attractive ot cyclists.
David Sombatpium of Castro Valley told KTVU that knowing the quirks of the road helps keep cyclists safe.
"It's not that smooth, there's a lot of bumps you can't really see on pavement, so it can shake you up a bit," Sombatpium said.
Cyclists have posted video on YouTube of their descents along the road, nicknaming it the "Redwood Racetrack."
Some even share their best times, an incentive for some to go faster.
"I've come around turns, there have been packs of bikes that take up the whole lane," Jonathan Beck of Hayward told KTVU.
Around one of the roads turnsĀ is a roadside memorial to a popular rider who was killed six months ago when a car crossed the center of the road -- a reminder of the road's dangers.
