SACRAMENTO —
State Treasurer Bill Lockyer is no longer seeking a divorce from his wife, whose problems with substance abuse played out publicly and led to drug charges.
Lockyer is proud of the progress his wife, Nadia, has made in a drug treatment program, and the two have agreed to reconcile, Tom Dresslar, a spokesman for Lockyer, told the Oakland Tribune. Lockyer withdrew divorce papers he filed in July this week.
Nadia Lockyer, 41, a former county supervisor, was arrested in August after authorities said they found her showing signs of methamphetamine intoxication. She has pleaded not guilty to drug charges and a misdemeanor count of child abuse alleging she kept drugs in the Orange County home she was staying at with the couple's 9-year-old son.
She had earlier resigned from her seat on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors after saying she was assaulted in a hotel by a former boyfriend whom she met in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. The state Justice Department investigated the claim but eventually declined to charge the man with any crime.
In April, an email that appeared to be sent from Nadia Lockyer went to a newspaper accusing her husband of supplying her with drugs.
"I simply can't bear this any longer. Goodbye to everyone," the note read. The newspaper, fearing for her safety, called police.
Bill Lockyer has denied the claim, and Nadia Lockyer has since claimed she wrote part of the email, but the portion about her husband supplying her with drugs was added by someone else.
The couple was married in 2003. Bill Lockyer, a former state legislator and attorney general, helped his wife win her supervisor's seat in 2010 after transferring about $1.5 million from his campaign committee to hers.
