SAN FRANCISCO —
The man responsible for a series of rapes and sexual assaults in the Mission District is in jail, according to police.
San Francisco police investigators told KTVU Monday that their suspect in a string of violent sexual assaults has admitted to participating in the three attacks.
"The last scene that we went to, the victim actually, there was a lot of blood. It was a very brutal scene," said San Francisco police Inspector Joseph Nannery.
Police arrested 32 year-old Frederick Dozier of San Francisco Friday following an anonymous tip.
"The biggest break in this case came from a tip that came in. And from that tip came a name, a first name," Nannery said.
Police said DNA evidence ties Dozier to the crime scenes.
"What I found very interesting about this case is how we were able to make the connection between all three cases," said San Francisco policeInspector Narda Gillespie.
The early-morning assaults in June, November and Decemberraised fear among Mission District and Noe Valley residents.
Police distributed a sketch of the rapist, released surveillance video and called in outside help.
"All told, it was probably close to 100 people," Nannery said. "We had outside agencies, we had the FBI on board, we had people from Quantico, Va., on board. They were doing a profile."
Investigators told KTVU Monday that Dozier worked for a recycling program.
On his Facebook page, Dozier indicates that he worked for the San Francisco Unified School District.
A worker for the San Francisco Unified School District said over e-mail that Dozier worked as a part-time student nutrition services worker. District officials said a full background check turned up nothing unusual when he was hired. He has since been fired.
Residents in neighborhoods where the assaults occurred said they are relieved.
"It's reassuring for me actually; I have to walk to work every morning at 4 to 5 a.m.," said Diana Gillespie, a San Francisco resident.
Dozier's first court appearance is set for Tuesday.
