Suspected Armed Robbers Arrested In Berkeley

BERKELEY —

Using a hook-and-ladder fire truck, heavily armed police officers made a rooftop arrest Monday of a man who allegedly robbed a nearby Noah's Bagel shop along with an accomplice.

Berkeley police officer Ed Galvan said the tense drama began unfolding shortly before 6 a.m. when two armed, masked men attempted to rob the bagel shop.

"Officers responded quickly and we able to take one suspect in custody as he left the store," Galvan said. "The other suspect fled."

What began next was a tense "building-by-building, rooftop-by-rooftop" search on Telegraph Avenue between Haste Street and Durant Avenue by heavily armed officers from Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville.

"We locked down the area (near People's Park and the UC-Berkeley campus) and began our search," Galvan said

The suspected gunman -- wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a red stripe -- was spotted on a roof and officers moved in. He surrendered and was ordered to climb down and was taken into custody without incident.
