MENLO PARK, Calif. —

Caltrain service  was experiencing delays Monday night after a train struck and killed a pedestrian in Menlo Park, a Caltrain spokeswoman said.

A woman was fatally struck by a southbound train at Encinal Avenue at around 7:30 p.m., spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.

The train, No. 804, was stopped at Oak Grove Avenue and its 238 passengers will be transferred to the next southbound train, which is running 45 minutes late, Dunn said.

Train tracks are closed in the area as emergency crews respond and northbound train No. 447 is being held at Palo Alto station until the tracks are reopened, Dunn said.

No injuries were reported among the passengers or Caltrain crew.

This is the first fatality of the year on the Caltrain tracks, Dunn said. Last year there were 16 fatalities.

Caltrain was running on a Saturday schedule Monday because of the holiday.
