UCSF Makes Major Change Following Fatal Crash

SAN FRANCISCO —

UC San Francisco agreed to make big changes to all of its shuttle buses Thursday.

The change come following a fatal crash last week between a bus and a big rig at Oak and Octavia streets.

The university will add seat belts over the next few weeks, and the entire fleet should be outfitted by the end of August.

In last week's crash, 52-year-old professor Kevin Mack was thrown from the shuttle bus and died.

"I think seat belts in shuttle buses or any buses for that matter would be a good idea," said UCSF employee David Kelegian.

Kelegian was working Mack at the time and is a regular on the shuttle.

"It allows people that work for UCSF, as well as patients to get around town," Kelegian said. "It helps the underserved communities reach their appointments so it's generally a good thing."

Last week's deadly collison was the second involving a UCSF shuttle bus in the last year.

San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said UCSF's changes could lead to tougher regulations from the state.

"I'm a believer in smart regulation when it comes to enhancing public safety and I think that this a poster child of one example," said Mirkarimi.

UCSF officials said they've addied adverstisements on the outside and inside of the buses asking for feedback so they can address any other issues.
