Veal activists target Nancy Pelosi and Piatti Restaurant

By Evan Borders - KTVU.com

MILL VALLEY, Calif. —

In Defense of Animals' (IDA) members protested against Nancy Pelosi and one of her restaurants which she invests in, Piatti in Mill Valley, for allowing the sale of veal.

IDA members and supporters have sent Leader Pelosi almost 8,000 faxes asking her to adopt a No Veal policy at all of her restaurants. They’re urging one of America's most powerful "progressive" politicians to align her public persona with her personal ventures by removing veal from all of her restaurants.

Veal is the flesh of a young calf. Calves bred to yield veal are usually raised indoors under controlled temperatures and intensively fed on milk, high-protein calf meal, or both. Herbaceous foods are excluded, which results in an iron deficiency that produces the desirable light colour in the meat. In recent decades, animal-rights groups have denounced calf farming as cruel.

“These poor animals are just confined to extreme measures…they’re kept in cages where they can’t stand up or turn around and chained at the neck”, stated In Defense of Animals’ Special Projects Officer Christy Griffin.

IDA members and supporters believe that Leader Pelosi claims to be "green" and a "sustainable living" supporter, but fails to do so since she is “allowing the sale of veal at her four restaurants in which she is an investor”.

Calls placed to Piatti and their PR agency for comment have not been returned as of Wednesday afternoon.
