North Bay Fires: Shelters open for evacuees fleeing with pets

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KTVU) - Amid the widespread evacuations from the North Bay fires, a large number of residents on Monday are seeking shelter for not only themselves, but for their animals as well.

Many locations are filling up.

One volunteer at the Sonoma Humane Society in Santa Rosa told KTVU it has been extremely difficult, as the shelter is working with a "skeleton crew." 

The volunteer said that many shelter employees could not get to work, due to road closures or were evacuated themselves and have lost their homes.

A number of shelters have been set up for people and their pets in Sonoma County.

The following is a list provided to KTVU by the Sonoma Human Society. (Many locations are at or near capacity.)

  • Sonoma County Fairgrounds at 1350 Bennet Valley Rd. (This site is accepting evacuees and their large animals.) 
  • Santa Rosa Finley Community Center at 2060 West College Ave., Santa Rosa (this shelter is at capacity)
  • Santa Rosa Veterans Building at 1351 Maple Ave., Santa Rosa (This shelter is at capacity)
  • Finley Center in Santa Rosa is accepting evacuees and small pets (May be full)
  • Sebastopol Community Center at 390 Morris St.
  • Sebastopol Cloverdale Citrus Fair at 1 Citrus Fair Dr.
  • Cloverdale Sonoma Valley High School at 20000 Broadway
  • Sonoma Analy High School Gym at 6950 Analy Ave.
  • Sebastopol Elsie Allen High School, 599 Bellevue Ave.
  • Santa Rosa Healdsburg Community Center at 1157 Healdsburg Ave.
  • Healdsburg Church of Christ at 370 Sonoma Mountain Parkway
  • Petaluma Community Center at 320 N. McDowell Blvd., Petaluma (This shelter is at capacity)
  • Petaluma Post No 1929 Veterans of Foreign Wars at 1094 Petaluma Blvd S.
  • Petaluma New Life Church at 1310 Clegg St.
  • Petaluma Cook Middle School at 2480 Sebastopol Rd.
  • Windsor Casa Grande High School at 3333 Casa Grande Rd., Petaluma
  • Santa Rosa Guerneville Veterans Hall at 16255 1st St.
  • Guerneville Monte Rio School at 20700 Foothill Dr.
  • Monte Rio Windsor High School at 8695 Windsor Rd. 

Sonoma County Animals Services is without power and services, according to Sonoma Human Society officials. 

But officials said most local shelters are open to accept stray animals or pets that have been displaced or lost in the evacuations. 

Evacuee Mersadies Kasidy McDowell posted on Facebook that she managed to get out of the fire zone with her animals including a number of foster dogs.
