MONTEREY BAY (KTVU) - Video taken from the depths of the Monterey Bay shows a close encounter with a fascinating creature.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration posted the video which shows a "ghostly white octopus" on its Facebook page.
The video was captured on the first dive into NOAA's Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
In the video researchers identify the octopus as a 'Dumbo Octopus," saying "the world loves a dumbo."
The octopus delights the researchers, showing off for the camera by flapping its wing-like fins. At one point it inverts its webbed arms to show rows of suckers.
According to NOAA, the main objective of the expedition is to characterize an unexplored, deep-water (> 3,000 m) region of basaltic rocky reef that resides southeast of Davidson Seamount, within the borders of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Researchers aim to characterize habitat, species, and communities in the area.
