One dead after apartment fire in Castro Valley

One woman has died as a result of a two-alarm fire at a Castro Valley apartment this morning, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 6:16 a.m. at a two-story townhouse in the 20000 block of San Miguel Avenue, according to Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.

The fire occurred less than 100 feet away from an Alameda County Fire Department fire station. Firefighters say they could smell the smoke.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire by about 6:30 a.m., Knowles said. Information about the victim was not immediately available.
