Driver arrested for DUI after pedestrian hit, killed by vehicle in Fremont

FREMONT (BCN) A 57-year-old Fremont man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing a fatal injury for striking and killing a 44-year-old male pedestrian near the Fremont Hub Shopping Center just before 10 a.m. today, police said.

Robert Greer of Fremont was driving a 2013 Nissan Rogue compact SUV southbound on Argonaut Way near Mowry Avenue when he lost control and struck the pedestrian, who's from Huntington Beach, and the rear of a trailer, according to police.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fremont police Sgt. Ricardo Cortes. His name hasn't yet been released.

Investigators believe the pedestrian was struck while he was standing near a 2018 utility trailer that was connected to a 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck as he was attempting to move a piano from the trailer to a residence on Argonaut Way, police said.

The pickup truck and utility trailer were legally parked on the side of Argonaut Way at the time of the collision, according to police.

Officers who responded to the collision found Greer unconscious in the driver's seat of the Nissan Rogue, police said.

Greer was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries that aren't considered to be life-threatening and while he was there investigators "recognized objective signs of drug impairment," police said in a statement.

Cortes described the area where the collision occurred as "a heavily-traveled roadway" because it's next to the shopping center, other businesses and housing complexes.

Fremont police said anyone who has information about the fatal collision should call traffic investigators at (510) 790-6760.
