Repairs to Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to begin Tuesday
Repairs to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, damaged by falling concrete earlier this month, will start Tuesday night and continue for two weeks, Caltrans officials said.
Caltrans' contractor will begin the permanent repairs to replace an expansion joint on the span. The work will be done overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting.
One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during the work. On Monday night construction crews may close one lane to access the area, according to Caltrans.
The bridge remains safe, said Caltrans District 4 Director Tony Tavares.
"Caltrans is committed to safety while maintaining connectivity to this thriving region in the Bay Area," Tavares said.
A large chunk of concrete fell the morning of Feb. 7 on the bridge's lower deck, hitting a Mercedes Benz and closing the bridge much of the day. More concrete fell in the afternoon and the bridge was closed again, reopening in the evening.
