The Santa Cruz Fire Department is warning residents about a local company that is attempting to defraud local businesses.

The company has been presenting itself as a fire extinguisher service company, has been approaching local businesses and telling them they need to have their fire extinguishers serviced, Santa Cruz Fire Department Division Chief Jason Hajduk said in a release Thursday.

The company tries to mislead businesses by claiming it is with a state fire agency and presents itself as representing the fire department, according to the release.

Representatives from the company may be in uniform and in a marked vehicle and say they were sent by the fire department to service fire extinguishers and fire protection systems.

The company requests payment in cash.

In his statement, Hajduk said the Santa Cruz Fire Department does not endorse, recommend or send fire extinguisher servicing companies to local businesses.
