SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU/BCN) - At least one person was critically injured and another has been detained following an officer-involved shooting involving U.S. Park Police near Aquatic Park in San Francisco on Tuesday night, according to San Francisco police.
The shooting was reported around 9:31 p.m. near the park, located along Beach Street between Van Ness Avenue and Hyde Street, police said.
San Francisco police responded to a call of shots fired but were not involved in the shooting. The scene was cleared by Wednesday morning before 6 a.m.
The U.S. Park Police officer was not injured, police said. The person who suffered major injuries remained in the hospital Wednesday both they and the person detained weren't identified. The person detained was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and possessing a firearm with
a large capacity magazine, police said.
Police have not said what led up to the shooting, only that the Park Police officer came across a Toyota Camry and at some point there was some type of confrontation ending in the officer shooting and wounding one suspect. Investigators have not said why the officer opened fire.
With its views of Alcatraz and the Bay, Aquatic Park is a popular spot for visitors, but it's not the first time there's been gunfire.
In 2016, during the Pokemon Go craze, 20-year-old Calvin Riley was shot and killed while he was apparently playing the game. That case remains unsolved.
