2 injured in eastbound I-580 shooting near Fruitvale Ave.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - A man and a woman were injured when someone fired bullets into their white Nissan as they were traveling eastbound on Interstate 580 in Oakland Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened just before 3:17 p.m. when police got the first reports of shots being fired. Oakland Police officers say they are working with the CHP and Caltrans to study traffic cameras and try to get more information on the victims' vehicle and a possible suspect vehicle.

"We're following up with leads with witnesses who saw the description of the vehicle, who saw a description possibly of the shooters," said Officer Johnna Watson, an Oakland Police spokeswoman.

The driver's side of the white Nissan was riddled with bullet holes. One bullet appeared to have gone right through the front windshield where the driver was sitting.
           
A passerby said he was walking along Fruitvale Avenue when he heard gunfire and then saw the car.

"I heard about 8 or 9 shots go off almost in one cluster and in about 2 seconds all the shots were done," said Zachary Lutzo of Oakland.

Oakland police blocked off the Fruitvale Avenue exit ramp where the car came to a stop.

A relative said the male victim was with his girlfriend. The family is upset and say they have no idea why someone would shoot at the car.

"My cousin wasn't into anything. Neither was the female. So we have no idea. All they do is work and take care of their kids," said one relative who did not want to be named.

Police shut down eastbound lanes of 580 to search for evidence and put down markers where they found shell casings on the highway.  

Traffic at the start of rush hour came to a sudden stop causing a long backup and a long wait for commuters.

"We couldn't move any further and we were stuck there for more than an hour...before they went ahead and had us do a U-turn," said Laura Moreno of Oakland who was on her way home from work.

Police allowed drivers to use an entrance ramp to get off the freeway, diverting all traffic to side streets.

The vehicle that was shot had a pink Lyft rideshare sticker visible in the front windshield. Police say the driver did not appear to be driving for the company at the time of the shooting.

"At this point it doesn't appear to be a connection to that, but we'll certainly see where the investigation takes us," Officer Watson said.

Officer Watson said it happened during peak traffic time and encouraged motorists who may have witnessed any shootings or suspicious activity to come forward. In addition, she had advised anyone who had been on eastbound 580 in the timeframe of the shooting to get out and walk around their vehicles when they get home to check to see if it had been shot. 

Emergency medical services responded to the scene to provide medical attention. Both victims were transported to a local hospital and were listed in stable condition.

Skyfox could see the white 4-door Nissan car on the freeway with a Lyft sticker on the front windshield that had what appeared to be multiple bullet holes in it.

Oakland police are asking any witnesses who might have been traveling on 580 about 3 p.m. or who might have seen the incident to contact the Oakland Police Department Assault Section at (510) 238-3426.
