STANFORD, Calif. —

An accomplished volleyball player at Stanford died Sunday after being hospitalized a week earlier due to a medical emergency, according to the university.

Sophomore Samantha Wopat, 19, was reported to have been hospitalized on Saturday, March 17 due to an undeclared medical issue she experienced while at her student residence. She died after a week of battling the condition at the hospital while surrounded by family, friends and teammates, the university announced.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sam Wopat," said Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby in a report posted on the team’s website. "She was an integral member of the Stanford Athletics family and a tremendous student and athlete. On behalf of our administration, coaches and students I extend my condolences to Sam's siblings, parents, relatives and friends. Stanford University and the women's volleyball program have lost a wonderful young woman."

With her twin sister Carly, Wopat joined Stanford’s volleyball team in 2010. She proved to be an excellent hitter, averaging 1.16 kills per set over the 25 sets she played her sophomore year alone.

Before her time at Stanford, Wopat had accomplished much in the high school volleyball scene, including membership on the Junior Olympics team from 2006-2008, playing with the U.S. Youth National Team for the 2009 World Championships in Thailand and participating in the 2010 U.S. Women's Junior National Team, according to Stanford’s website.

Information on a possible memorial was not available at press time.
