That Kid's Got Game: High school sophomore makes 50-foot buzzer beater

(KTVU) - A 15-year-old North Carolina boy born to a basketball family did what he knows: Made a basket. A long basket. And then the internet made it go viral.   

It wasn’t a game winner, in fact, Sterling Charles Jr. and his Central Davidson High School squad lost the late December matchup. But the shot was spectacular. Sterling caught the ball on the inbound, put it on the floor once, and hurled it roughly 50 feet as the buzzer went off. So for owning an unforgettable shot, Sterling Charles Jr. from Lexington, North Carolina is this week’s talent on That Kid’s Got Game.

Sterling put up solid numbers that night, too. After sinking the 50-footer for his first shot, the sophomore point guard finished with 10 of his team’s 47 points. He added four assists and two rebounds in a game that was decided by 10 (57-47).

And while Sterling says he practices the long-range-heave just in case, it’s his ball handling skills that have improved this season, according to his sister, Jazmine Charles, a professional basketball player who competed overseas in Romania. 

Sterling recently made the all-tournament team as a sophomore at a county tournament that’s been held in their hometown for 42 years. And from his older sister who has played professional ball, he’s reminded that “academics come first.”
