Lotería 'Mexican Bingo' game gets millennial makeover

- If you played the classic Lotería game or "Mexican Bingo" as a kid -- there is a new version for your next game night.

The classic Lotería is similar to bingo, but instead of numbers, the game uses images on a deck of cards. Millennial Lotería is a parody that reimagines the game with more updated references, including La Dama as La Feminist, El Catrín as El Hipster and Las Jaras as La Hashtag.

It was created by writer and creative director Mike Alfaro for a new generation.

"I created this series to combat outdated Hispanic stereotypes and bring a more modern and relevant representation of Hispanic-American and their daily life," Alfaro's website states.

After posting the Millennial Lotería cards on Instagram, they quickly went viral online. The @MillennialLoteria gained more than 35,000 followers in less than a year.

After listing the game on Amazon, Alfaro said it received 10,000 preorders by its Dec. 4 launch day.

"There are a lot of people here in the United States who are immigrants from Latin American countries, who still want to play Millennial Lotería and want to share it with their friends, so this was a way of making it more relatable for them," Alfaro said on FOX 11's Good Day LA. "Also for people who are first generation, second generation, who may have not grown up with it. Now it’s a way for them to get back into it as well."

Millennial Lotería includes 46 cards, 10 boards, 80 bitcoin tokens and a collectible pin.
