A fatal collision early Saturday morning that killed two women on Interstate 880 in Oakland is being investigated by California Highway Patrol.

The deadly crash occurred when a car going the wrong way crashed into another vehicle. The CHP received the first emergency call at 4:18 a.m. Investigators said a wrong-way car slammed into a vehicle that was headed in the right direction. Northbound 880  near the Broadway off-ramp was closed for a few hours.

Both drivers died at the scene. Their identities have not been released, but a CHP officer said they were both women.

Authorities said it was too early to tell whether the wrong-way driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. An officer estimated that the wrong-way car was traveling at least, the speed limit.

A Sig-alert was issued, as northbound Lanes 1, 2, 3 were blocked. The slow lane remained open, but traffic was affected.
