Victim in fatal shooting at Oakland homeless encampment ID'd

OAKLAND (BCN) A man who was fatally shot at a homeless encampment near the MacArthur BART station in Oakland late Thursday morning was identified by police today as 44-year-old Jason Coleman.

Police said Coleman was shot in the vicinity of 42nd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way at about 11:15 a.m. on Thursday and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A suspect was taken into custody after the shooting but police haven't yet released his name.

The gun that was used in the shooting has been recovered, according to police.

Coleman's death was the second fatal shooting at a homeless camp in Oakland in nine days.

Dominic Jarvis, 34, was fatally shot in the area of Northgate Avenue and Sycamore Street at 4:09 a.m. on Sept. 5.

No one has been arrested for that shooting and no motive has been disclosed.
