Wife of Alameda County sheriff's deputy sentenced to 7 years for DUI crash, killing 3-year-old boy

- The wife of an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday for a DUI crash that killed a three-year-old boy.

Yarenit Malihan’s crash on Interstate 680 near Bollinger Canyon in September of 2016 was one of several arrests for alcohol-related incidents. She was charged May 16, 2017 with manslaughter for the crash that killed three-year-old Elijah Dunn.

Elijah died a few days after the vehicle he and his family were in was struck from behind by Malihan’s white 2008 Toyota Sequoia. The family ran out of gas and they were parked in a 2007 Toyota Camry on the side of the freeway.

Elijah’s one-year-old sister and 11-year-old brother were rushed for medical care to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, but they survived.

Several months after the crash, Malihan was placed on three-years of probation in Alameda County in connection with her arrest for driving with a .13 blood alcohol level while her child was in the car. That incident happened several months before the fatal crash.
