Woman shot, killed while driving on Highway 4 in Concord described as "lovable person"

CONCORD, Calif. (KTVU) - The woman who was found dead after her wrecked vehicle was discovered on Highway 4 in Concord on Saturday was identified by authories as Destinee Hillery.

Alishia Westbrook, sister of the 25-year-old victim, spoke to KTVU Monday about her loved one’s passing.

“She was really loving. She loved her family. She had plenty of nieces and nephews that also loved her. She was a cool aunt,” Westbrook said.

Westbrook, an Antioch resident, told us that Hillery’s death is the second tragedy to strike the family after the recent passing of their brother.

“It’s just really tragic, really sad. We just buried my brother a little over a month ago. So, we’re grieving over his passing,” she said. "He died in his sleep.”

Then on Saturday, Westbrook recounted, CHP officers showed up to her mother’s door to share the grim news that Destinee, the sibling she called a wonderful aunt to her children, was gone.

Westbrook said that Hillery’s had left her job at the Safeway in Almao at 2 p.m. Saturday, where she had just been promoted to manager, just before the shooting took place.

The CHP said that her silver Honda Accord was traveling eastbound when it first veered into the center divider and then across all eastbound lanes onto the Willow Pass Road exit off-ramp.

Investigators said Hillery was shot, but aren’t yet sure if the shooting or the crash caused her death.

“She didn’t have any enemies, which was odd that this would even happen. So, I’m not sure who would even do this kind of thing to her,” said Westbook. She was always a loveable person, she had multiple friends. It was just… I have no clue, no clue at all,” Westbrook said as she struggled to understand the reason for her sister’s death.

A graduate of Deer Valley High School in Antioch, Hillery received a certificate in medical assisting from Carrington College in 2015.

“She wasn’t into any negativity, you know. She was a successful lady (and) had her life together and going in a positive direction. So, I’m really just looking for answers.”

A CHP spokesperson said Monday that her shooting appears to have been gang related, but added they were still searching for a motive and suspect in her death.
