A counterintuitive but highly sought-after award, that of the World's Ugliest Dog, went to a rescued English bulldog, Zsa Zsa, at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma Saturday.

With a seemingly three-inch-long lolling tongue and a jutting jaw, Zsa Zsa prevailed over 13 other contestants in the Ugliest Dog contest, a mainstay of the fair for more than 30 years.

Zsa Zsa won $1,500, a trophy and a trip to New York for a live appearance on NBC's Today Show June 25. The fair will also make an in-kind donation to Underdog Rescue.

Zsa Zsa herself is a rescue, according to her "adoptive parents," Megan and Jesse Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota. Continuing the paradox of the contest, Megan Brainard, who obviously loves her dog, said, "We are so excited for her. She deserves this!"
