Raiders Sign Top Lineman Gallery

Posted: 2:45 pm EDT July 28, 2004

The Oakland Raiders will have the second overall pick in the 2004 draft in training camp, as the team reached an agreement in principal with offensive tackle Robert Gallery.

Gallery is the highest drafted player to reach an agreement with his respective club and the second on the Raiders to strike a deal.

According to ESPN.com, Oakland will count on Gallery to make a smooth transition into the NFL and help an aging offensive line. The former Iowa standout will compete with six-year pro Barry Sims for a starting job.

Gallery, a 6-7, 320-pound mammoth, was the only returnee on the Hawkeyes' 2003 offensive line that paved the way for running back Fred Russell to rush for 1,205 yards and six touchdowns.

He won the Outland Trophy last season as the nation's top interior lineman. The last Iowa player to capture the honor was Alex Karras in 1957.
