NFL Game Summary - Pittsburgh At Arizona

Posted: 4:09 pm PDT August 12, 2006

(Sports Network) - Kurt Warner was 9-for-13 for 118 yards and threw two touchdown passes as the Arizona Cardinals opened their new stadium with a 21-13 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cardinals Stadium features a retractable roof and, for the first time in the United States, a retractable field. The retractable field sits on a 12-ton tray and will be moved outside to absorb sunlight when not in use.

Running back Edgerrin James donned a Cardinals uniform for the first time and carried the ball twice for minus-2 yards. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger saw action, although limited, for the first time since his motorcycle accident two months ago and went 3-for-4 for 29 yards.

Roethlisberger drove the Steelers deep into Cardinals territory on the opening drive, but a missed field goal kept Pittsburgh off the scoreboard.

Warner then led Arizona on a 12-play, 56-yard drive capped by a five-yard touchdown pass to Bryant Johnson for a 7-0 lead.

Pittsburgh answered with a 48-yard field goal from Jeff Reed on its ensuing drive, but Arizona upped its lead with 3:31 left in the second quarter after Warner found Obafemi Ayanbadejo on a screen pass and he rumbled 15 yards into the end zone for a 14-3 advantage. That score capped an 11-play, 71-yard march.

After an Anthony Smith interception late in the first half, Shane Boyd drove the Steelers down to Arizona's six-yard line, but the drive stalled and Pittsburgh had to settle for a 24-yard field goal from Mark Brubaker to make it 14-6 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Arizona extended its lead to 21-6 with 9:41 left in the fourth after Diamond Ferri scampered in from five yards out to cap an 11-play, 78-yard drive.

Pittsburgh added a meaningless touchdown with less than two minutes left in the contest after Omar Jacobs found Isaac Smolko in the back corner of the end zone for a one-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-13.
