Toronto, ON -- (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly close to closing in on a contract with defenseman Chris Chelios, which means the veteran is set to return for his 25th NHL season.According to TSN of Canada, reports from Detroit indicate the deal is for one year and worth less than the $850,000 the backliner made a season ago. TSN also quotes Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, who said Chelios would sign the deal once he returns to Detroit next week. The 46-year-old Chelios had three goals and 12 points in 69 regular-season games for the Wings in 2007-08. However, due to nagging injuries, he was limited to zero points in 14 games and did not skate at all in the six-game Stanley Cup Finals as the Wings topped Pittsburgh. Chelios is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, capturing the silver with Montreal in 1986 and with Detroit in 2002 and last season. Internationally, the Chicago native has played for USA Hockey four times in the Olympics (1984, 1998, 2002, 2006). In addition, TSN is reporting that the club is close to signing gritty forward Darren McCarty and young defenseman Kyle Quincey.
