BERKELEY, Calif. (KTVU) - UC Berkeley held a memorial service for the heavy loss it suffered in last Friday's fire at the Ghost Ship warehouse.
As many as 500 people came to Zellerbach Hall on campus to mourn the loss and celebrate the lives of Cal's own who died in the fire.
"Among the 36 confirmed fatalities, five were members of our campus community," said Nicholas Dirks, UC Berkeley's Chancellor.
Jennifer Morris, 20, and Vanessa Plotkin, 21, were undergraduates. David Cline, 24, and Griffin Madden, 23, were recent graduates. Chelsea Dolan, 33, was a volunteer at campus radio station KALX.
Fighting back and openly crying, family members spoke of the pain and anguish or their loss at this sad and solemn memorial. "When Jenny was young, as part of our church community, she was learning about the lord and she accepted Jesus into her heart. So, we know she's still alive today in heaven," said Michael Morris, Jenny Morris's dad.
The Plotkin's were just as emotional. "Vanessa, I feel her right here in my heart she is in all or our hearts," said Gary Plotkin, Vanessa Plotkin's dad. Victoria Plotkin not only lost her sister, she also lost her lifetime best friend: Jenny Morris. "I love you Jenny, I miss you so much," said Victoria Plotkin who tearfully struggled on, "Vanessa was my twin sister. She was my best friend. She was my light. She was my sun."
In the entranceway, friends and well wishers signed portrait pages to commemorate the event.
31 other families and friends are going through this same grief over what never should have happened.
