She believes in having lots of fun activities and rewarding her hard working students with special parties. Ken Gonzalez, Balboa High School, S.F.Ken Gonzalez has been teaching English and English as a second language for the past eight years at Balboa High School in San Francisco. Gonzalez was instrumental in developing the WALC (Wilderness Arts and Literacy Collaborative) program, promoting literacy and environmental education and is an outstanding fundraiser, having secured an impressive $1.3 million for both the school and the WALC program. Laurie Baker-Flynn, Alvarado Elementary School, S.F.Laurie Baker-Flynn has been teaching for fifteen years, the past seven as a kindergarten teacher at Alvarado School. Baker-Flynn is a strong advocate of having families involved in their children's education and to lure parents into her classroom, Baker-Flynn invites them to breakfast. Barry Wofsy, Matthew Turner Elementary School, BeniciaBarry Wofsy did a mid-career change and became a teacher sixteen years ago. He has a reputation among his third graders as being very strict but he's also an innovative teacher with a great sense of humor. Wofsy created a program called, "Simulations" that is so successful that it's now an all grade-level activity at Mathew Turner school. Mary Currier, Buri Buri Elementary School, So. S.F.Mary Currier has been teaching for over thirty years and continues to bring enthusiasm to her class of twenty, third grade students. Currier encourages her students to honor and acknowledge their individuality and liveliness Jill Thompson, Forestville Elementary School, ForestvilleJill Thompson is considered a "local legend" due to the exciting learning environment she creates. As a second grade teacher, Thompson loves to joke with her students and is known for creating unusual nicknames for students. Cleopatra Nogara, A.P. Giannini Middle School, S.F.Cleopatra Nogara is an energetic seventh and eight grade algebra teacher. This thirty-three year uses her interests in fine arts to make advance mathematical equations simple to understand Beth Burlingame, Stone Valley Middle School, AlamoBeth Burlingame loves history and brings it alive to her seventh grade students. During a lesson on Japanese culture, Burlingame's students learned the art of origami and sushi making. Once again, KTVU and Sylvan Learning Centers will recognize the best educators in Bay Area schools, K-12. The Award: Eight individual educators throughout the Bay Area will be honored for special recognition. Each month, from April to November 2004, an outstanding educator will be featured on KTVU Channel 2 through public service announcements and the KTVU website at www.ktvu.com. In addition, Sylvan Learning Centers will provide each honoree with an $1000.00 certificate to a teacher supply store and a scholarship to one graduate level teacher education course from Canter & Associates. Value of this scholarship is $370.00 Recognition: An awards reception for all awardees will be held at the KTVU studios in June 2004. Selection Criteria: *The educator has created an innovative/creative program to help students learn. *The educator has a success record that can be demonstrated. *The educator has inspired students to learn. *Nominee teaches K - 12th grades, public or private schools within the nine Bay Area counties. Nomination Procedure: *Answer each question as thoroughly as possible. *Type or write clearly. *Use personal examples of the program's impact on students. *Submit two letters of reference. *Nomination forms accepted via mail or fax by end of business day, *Deadline: February 13, 2004 Multiple nominations will be counted as one nomination.
