Peterson's Production Limited, But Vikings Rout 49ers

Posted: 7:27 pm PST December 9, 2007

(Sports Network) - Tarvaris Jackson completed 16-of-25 passes for 163 yards and one touchdown, as Minnesota, despite a struggling Adrian Peterson, kept its playoff hopes alive with a 27-7 drubbing of the San Francisco 49ers.

Chester Taylor rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown on eight carries for the Vikings (7-6), who extended their winning streak to four games. Minnesota currently holds the final wild card spot in the conference, a game ahead of Washington, Detroit and Arizona.

Minnesota defensive lineman Kevin Williams returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage. Peterson was held in check, generating only three yards on 14 carries. Robert Ferguson caught four passes for 57 yards and one score.

"I was worried about the guys taking a long road trip," said Vikings head coach Brad Childress. "The weather is too warm here, we left minus six. Sometimes it rattles their brains here, with the sky so blue and the nice temperature. I thought the players played well and the coaches did a good job too."

Trent Dilfer completed 7-of-19 passes for 45 yards and one interception for San Francisco (3-10) before leaving with 19 seconds remaining in the second quarter due to an injury. Shaun Hill, a sixth-year man out of Maryland, replaced Dilfer and finished the game with 180 yards passing on 22-of-28 attempts, as the Niners lost for the 10th time in their last 11 games. He threw one touchdown and was picked off once.

Frank Gore carried the ball 16 times for 68 yards and caught eight passes for 49 yards for the 49ers.

"There are no moral victories in stopping Peterson," said San Francisco cornerback Nate Clements. "We had a game plan all week to stop their run, and we were able to stop one guy, but Taylor was still able to move the ball on us. We had some good plays on defense, but we need to bring it on every play to prevent giving up big gains."

It was not the start San Francisco envisioned. Following a false start penalty on tight end Vernon Davis, Dilfer's first pass was deflected by Williams. Williams then cradled the ball and rumbled 18 yards to the end zone, giving the Vikings a 7-0 lead 14 seconds into the contest.

The Vikings' opening drive of the game ate up six minutes of the clock before stalling at the 49ers' 30-yard line. Ryan Longwell's 48-yard field goal made it 10-0 with 5:08 remaining in the first and capped the 13-play, 55-yard march.

On Minnesota's second possession, which carried over to the second quarter, Jackson completed passes of 23 yards to Ferguson and nine yards to Visanthe Shiancoe, and Peterson rushed for seven yards on two carries to place the ball at the Niners' 19. On 2nd-and-10, the Niners blitzed off the right, but Jackson hit Ferguson at the 12 and he scampered to the end zone for a 17-0 lead.

Later in the second quarter, Gore fumbled the ball and Minnesota's E.J. Henderson returned it to the San Francisco 23. The 49ers defense stiffened up, forcing the Vikings to settle for a 46-yard field goal by Longwell.

After the Niners went three-and-out, Taylor extended the Vikings' advantage to 27-0 with an 84-yard touchdown run. Taylor ran to his left, followed his blockers before bouncing outside and racing down the far sideline for the score with 5:52 left in the first half.

San Francisco had a chance to crack the scoreboard before halftime thanks to a Minnesota turnover.

Jackson completed a 14-yard pass to Aundrae Allison, who was stripped by Walt Harris, and Patrick Willis came out of the pile in possession of the football at the Minnesota 28 with 2:39 remaining.

San Francisco moved the ball to the nine-yard line, but on 4th-and-2, and trailing 27-0, the Niners decided to forgo the field goal. Dilfer was flushed from the pocket and scrambled to his left. While stumbling short of the marker, Dilfer was nailed in the head by Charles Gordon and laid motionless for several minutes.

Dilfer eventually sat up and was assisted on the field, and then was taken by cart to the locker room.

Twice in the first 30 minutes, Maurice Hicks recorded kickoff returns of 55 yards, but the Niners failed to take advantage of the great field position.

Hill came in at quarterback to start the third and made an immediate impact, guiding the Niners on a 12-play, 61-yard scoring drive. Hill connected with Arnaz Battle for a five-yard touchdown, the first TD pass of his career, nearly eight minutes into the quarter to make it 27-7.

Hill was picked off by Pat Williams in Minnesota territory late in the third, and Gore fumbled the ball away at the Minnesota 28 with nearly five minutes left in the fourth.
