VIENNA, Austria -- The mighty twin Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, sent the reigning champion United States into the 2008 Davis Cup quarterfinals by virtue of their straight sets doubles victory against the host Austrians on Saturday. The Americans have an insurmountable 3-0 lead in this best-of-five opening-round tie.The Bryans improved to 14-1 in their career Davis Cup doubles rubbers with an easy 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 handling of an Austrian tandem of Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer in a mere 1 hour, 29 minutes on a red clay surface at Ferry Dusika Hallenstadion. The Bryans committed only 10 unforced errors, swatted 12 aces, held their serve throughout the lopsided encounter, and broke their Austrian counterparts five times en route to victory.Bob and Mike Bryan are now tied with John McEnroe and Peter Fleming for the best-ever American doubles record in Davis Cup play. The Bryans clinched the first title in 12 years for the Americans back in December when they beat a Russian tandem to give the U.S. an unassailable 3-0 advantage in the World Group finale in Portland. The U.S. will host France in April's quarterfinals. In Friday's opening singles in Vienna, Andy Roddick and James Blake combined to give the Americans a commanding 2-0 lead. The former world No. 1 and 2003 U.S. Open champion Roddick survived his opening singles rubber by outlasting Austrian lefthander Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 in 4 hours, 6 minutes. Blake then doubled the U.S. margin by overcoming pesky Austrian southpaw Stefan Koubek 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.The Americans played this tie with the same team that captured last year's championship.Sunday's dead rubbers here currently call for Roddick to face Koubek and Blake to meet Melzer, but those matchups are subject to change.Patrick McEnroe is guiding the United States, while Gilbert Schaller is the Austrian captain. The 32-time Davis Cup champion U.S. is now 3-0 all-time versus Austria, including a 3-2 win on clay here in Vienna in 1990. Their last meeting came in Connecticut in 2004, with the Americans prevailing 5-0.In Romania, the visiting French secured a berth in the quarters when their doubles team of Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra outlasted a Romanian tandem of Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 3-6, 6-2.The win gave France, captained by Guy Forget, an unassailable 3-0 lead, as the visitors also claimed both of Friday's opening singles rubbers when Richard Gasquet handled Victor Hanescu 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-5 and Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcame Andrei Pavel 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in Sibiu.France will meet the U.S. for a 15th time, with both nations splitting the first 14 ties, dating back to 1905. The French beat the Americans 3-2 in their last meeting, a semifinal one in Paris back in 2002.
