Biedrins Stricken By Appendicitis; Out Indefinitely

Hours after out-dueling All-Star Kevin Garnett in the Golden State Warriors dramatic 119-117 win over the Boston Celtics, center Andris Biedrins was stricken by an appendicitis attack that may require surgery, team officials said Thursday.

Biedrins showed no signs of illness against the Celtics, scoring 21 points, pulling down 13 rebounds and blocking one shot. But later in the night, he fell ill and called team doctors.

"We got some bad news today, Biedrins has appendicitis and will be out indefinitely," said head coach Don Nelson. "We'll know more after he sees a doctor. But it looks like surgery right now and he'll be out for some time."

Nelson said the loss of Biedrins puts the team that is battling for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West in a bind.

"Rebounding has been a big problem for us and he's our best rebounder by far," Nelson said. "It's hard to fathom going into a game without him quite frankly."

The Warriors did sign veteran Chris Webber to a contract before the All-Star break, but he has only seen limited action. Nelson could also go small with forward Al Harrington playing center or go with second-year player Patrick O'Bryant or rookie Brandan Wright.

"It will probably depend on the situation against the team we are playing," Nelson said.

Baron Davis said the news took some of the luster off the team's dramatic win.

"It was unfortunate to hear this morning, it's some disturbing news," Davis said. "It's tough. That has been the story of our season, having guys miss games. We are just going to have to find a way to hold the fort down."
