Bronx, NY -- (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees and Blue Jays were involved in a benches-clearing brawl in Tuesday's 10-4 Toronto win.Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning. Then Mark Melancon hit Aaron Hill in the back with a pitch during the eighth inning which got Toronto's attention. Jesse Carlson retaliated by throwing behind Jorge Posada in the home half, to which Posada could be seen mouthing, "You don't want to do that." Benches and bullpens cleared before order was restored, but not for long. Posada wound up drawing a walk in the at-bat and eventually scored on Brett Gardner's double to get the Yankees within 9-3. As Posada was crossing home he brushed past Carlson who, after the catcher passed and was on his way to the dugout, said something to Posada's dismay. Posada came rushing back and the benches cleared. "There is a lot at stake here; we can't afford to get anyone hurt or lose anyone," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "There's a lot of passion in this game. Sometimes it doesn't look that way...but there's a lot of passion there." Following a scuffle near home plate, Yankees reserve Shelley Duncan could be seen rolling on the ground mixing it up with Toronto backstop Rod Barajas. Yankee pitcher CC Sabathia pulled Posada away from the mess. "I don't want my kids to see that, so hopefully they don't," said Posada. Girardi was left with a welt under his left eye and a cut on his ear as he was accidentally hit by Blue Jays infielder John McDonald, who appeared to try and pull players away from the scrum near home plate. Carlson had a big bruise on the left side of his forehead. "You don't want anybody gettin' hurt, and I'm probably the smallest guy in MLB," said Carlson. "We were right near their dugout so I was hoping I got out of there (OK), somebody got in a shot and I'm fine. It didn't even hurt." When all was said and done, Posada and Carlson were the only ones thrown out. It was Posada's first ejection since August of 2007.
