Bonds Ties Ruth

Oakland, CA -- (Sports Network) - Barry Bonds belted the 714th homer of his career on Saturday, tying the legendary Babe Ruth for second place on the all- time list."This is a great accomplishment because of Babe Ruth and what he brought to the game of baseball and his legacy that he brought to baseball," said Bonds. "I think this and a World Series ring would be the ultimate." Bonds cracked a 1-1 pitch off Brad Halsey deep over the fence in right-center in the top of the second inning during the Giants' 4-2, 10-inning win over Oakland. "I was pretty sure once it left my hands it was going to be bad news, said Halsey. "I appreciate the fact that Barry Bonds is a tremendous ballplayer. I'm No. 714. I'm not the only one. Whether you take performance enhancing supplements or not you don't hit home runs like that unless you're a tremendous hitter." It was Bonds' sixth homer of the season. It also ended a long home run drought, as Bonds had not belted one out of the yard since May 7 at Philadelphia. Bonds is now 41 homers shy of Hank Aaron for the all-time lead. "I enjoy baseball, said Bonds. "But, I'm just glad it's over with. You guys (the media) can go with Albert Pujols, he's doing a lot of wonderful things right now. This took a lot off me. Trying to be get there is harder than going after. My teammates have been very supportive." A seven-time National League MVP and 13-time All-Star, Bonds rewrote the record books in 2001 by hitting 73 home runs, but he's come under tremendous scrutiny. Bonds is accused of telling a grand jury in 2003 that he never knowingly took performance-enhancing drugs, this according to a copy of his statement that was leaked to the San Francisco Chronicle. However, the recent book "Game of Shadows" alleges that his personal trainer, Greg Anderson, supplied Bonds with steroids on multiple occasions. Victor Conte, the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative who had a role in providing several athletes, including Bonds, with undetectable banned drugs, was sentenced last October to four months in prison and four months' home confinement in a plea deal. Anderson was given a three-month jail term and another three months in home confinement, and has reportedly been subpoenaed to testify before the federal grand jury investigating whether Bonds committed perjury.
