Phillies Need A Change
(Sports Network) - In my younger days I employed a tactic of ignoring a problem in hopes that it would simply go away. The Philadelphia Phillies seem to have picked up on the same strategy 124 years into their existence.Things are not going to plan in the City of Brotherly Love this season. The Phillies were swept by the Orioles in Wednesday's doubleheader and are currently seven games under .500 (35-42). More importantly, they have fallen into a tie with the Florida Marlins for second place in the NL East -- 12 games behind the New York Mets. It has all fallen to pieces in June -- on and off the field. The Phils are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak and have dropped 15 of their last 18 contests. Then there's the whole Brett Myers' situation, which is much more serious than losing ballgames. It can't feel good to sink millions of dollars into your future ace only to have him be accused of beating his wife in the middle of a Boston street. And the decision to let him pitch two days after the incident wasn't smart and only helped to further alienate an already fleeting fan base. So, that's the way June has gone for the Phillies in a nutshell. The shocking thing is that there has been no reaction from the Philadelphia front office. When a team with high expectations seemingly falls apart there is usually some sort of accompanying response whether it comes in the form of a coach's firing or a shocking trade. Nothing. Philadelphia fans are famous for their passion and can't easily stomach ownership pulling an Emperor Nero and fiddling while Rome burns. The fans clearly want some heads to roll and it's hard to fault them. When a team has a payroll of close to $90 million the consensus is that club should at least compete for a playoff berth. The options seem to be clear enough. The panic button should not be hit, but at least one major move needs to be made. Whether that be the firing of manager Charlie Manuel or the trading of a major player something obviously needs to be done. Otherwise management is sending the message that they are fine with losing and annual mediocrity. Then again, given the history of the losingest franchise in professional sports that could very well be the case. MYERS TAKES LEAVE The Phillies granted Myers time off following his arrest in Boston last week. Myers is not expected to return to the team for about 2 1/2 weeks, which is through the All-Star break. Myers was arrested last Friday in Boston on charges of assault and battery, one day before he made his scheduled start against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. The charges stem from an alleged incident with his wife, Kim. He was released after posting $200 bail and appeared at a preliminary arraignment on Friday morning. Myers issued his own apology Tuesday. "First, while I dispute that the facts are as alleged, I recognize that my behavior was inappropriate and for that I apologize," Myers said. "I recognize that the incident created an embarrassing situation for many people, including my wife and family, my teammates, the Phillies organization, and fans, and I am very sorry for that...I have asked the Phillies for some time off so that I can concentrate on this matter and make plans for whatever assistance is appropriate." Myers' record stands at 5-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 16 starts this season. WHO'S HOT Second baseman Chase Utley is hitting .304 (7-for-23) with three homers, four RBI and five runs scored in his last five contests. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins has hit safely in six straight games and is batting .393 (11-for-28) with five RBI and four runs scored in that stretch. WHO'S NOT Outfielder Pat Burrell has just one hit in his last 19 at-bats and has struck out 11 times in that span. Rookie left-hander Cole Hamels has struggled in his last four starts, going 0-4 with a 7.84 ERA in those outings. COMING UP The Phillies close out their three-game series in Baltimore before heading to Toronto for a weekend set with the Blue Jays.
