Westbrook, Eagles Soar Past 49ers

Posted: 9:14 pm PDT September 24, 2006

(Sports Network) - Brian Westbrook scored three touchdowns to guide the Philadelphia Eagles past the San Francisco 49ers, 38-24, at Monster Park.

Westbrook rushed for 117 yards and two scores on the ground while adding four receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles (2-1), who were coming off a gut-wrenching 30-24 overtime loss to the Giants, which saw them blow a 17-point fourth-quarter lead.

Donovan McNabb finished 18-of-33 for 296 yards with a pair of TD tosses and zero interceptions, while defensive tackle Mike Patterson scored on a 98-yard fumble return in the third quarter to keep the Eagles well ahead.

Alex Smith ended 27-of-46 for 293 yards with a touchdown for San Francisco (1-2), which defeated St. Louis at home last week. Rookie Michael Robinson added two rushing touchdowns in replacement of Frank Gore, who left in the third quarter with an abdominal strain and did not return.

The Eagles went on the attack immediately, deploying a flea-flicker on their very first play from scrimmage that resulted in a 50-yard pass and catch from McNabb to Reggie Brown. Two plays later, McNabb found Westbrook for a four- yard touchdown completion to make it 7-0.

Brown hauled in five catches for 106 yards on the day.

McNabb hooked up with L.J. Smith for a one-yard TD strike with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter to double the Eagles lead. Philadelphia went 57 yards on eight plays on that drive, which was propelled by a 24-yard completion from McNabb to Brown.

San Francisco got on the board midway through the second quarter, as Joe Nedney booted a 48-yard field goal to polish off an 11-play, 49-yard march.

Westbrook, though, broke off a 71-yard touchdown run on the Eagles' next possession to extend the lead to 21-3. The quick tailback exploded up the middle, fought off defenders as he scampered toward the outside, then raced down the left sideline for the score.

David Akers tacked on a 21-yard field goal with 2:49 remaining to give Philly a 24-3 halftime lead.

The defense got into the act in the third quarter, and did so in record- breaking fashion. The Eagles "D" denied Gore from the one-yard line three consecutive times, and forced a fumble on the fourth as Brian Dawkins flew in with his helmet to separate the ball from Gore's body. Big defensive lineman Patterson picked it up and rumbled 98 yards for the score, setting a new franchise record for a fumble return.

Gore left the game but Robinson proved an effective replacement, scoring from a yard out both late in the third and early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 31-17.

Philadelphia responded on its ensuing drive, however, when McNabb found Matt Schobel for a 60-yard gain that brought the offense down to the eight-yard line. Westbrook scampered into the end zone on the next play to halt San Francisco's comeback.

Smith's 15-yard TD pass to Eric Johnson with six seconds remaining capped the scoring.
