KTVU: Broadcasting for Five Decades

KTVU/Fox 2 has a rich history, starting with the bare minimum to launch a television station... now one of the most respected broadcasting facilities in the United States.

Captain SatelliteAs we celebrate nearly half a century on-the-air, we invite our loyal viewers to recall those unique programs that brightened our days and evenings... Lucy, Roller Derby, Charley & Humphrey, Captain Satellite, All-Star Wrestling, Creature Features, and the Ben Alexander Show.

KTVU has come a long way since the early days. And although we've changed, much of our colorful history still plays an important role as we begin our fifth decade.

We're still proud of our award-winning Ten O'clock News. The news desk looks different, the anchors have changed, but the newscast is still The Original Ten O'clock News. And of course, we've added additional news programming throughout the day.

We hit the airwaves the same year the Giants moved their baseball team from New York to San Francisco. KTVU carried Giants' games then, and we continue to be the team's broadcast home. In those early years, we carried college and professional football and ice hockey. Today, we are still the Bay Area's sports leader, home to the 49ers and NHL on Fox.

As the Bay Area's independent station, we competed against the network affiliates with outstanding prime time films on The Eight O'clock Movie.
