Lance Armstrong is in fourth place in the Tour of California bicycle race going into the tournament's third stage from San Jose to Modesto Tuesday.

Armstrong took a spill when he got tangled with a motorcycle during Monday's rainy second stage from Sausalito to Santa Cruz. But he quickly received a spare bike and returned to the race.

Strong wind and heavy rain hampered the field throughout most of the day, which saw two-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer of Santa Rosa become the race leader.

He finished second today to Thomas Peterson of North Bend, Wa., who completed the 115.9-mile leg in a little over 5 hours.

Armstrong is making a comeback after a 31/2-year retirement. He finished 13th in the stage.

The nine-day event concludes Sunday in Escondido.
