Separate crashes snarl I-880 traffic in Hayward, San Leandro

HAYWARD (KTVU) -- A traffic crash between a big rig and up to five other vehicles prompted the closure of some southbound lanes of Interstate 880 at the state Highway 92/Jackson Street connector just a few hours after another accident on the interstate closed northbound lanes in San Leandro.

The California Highway Patrol said three southbound lanes were blocked after the collision, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. and during the evening rush hour commute.

According to initial reports, four ambulances were called to the scene and one car was said to have been sheared in half during the crash. Information about injuries was pending.

Several hours earlier, a fatal traffic accident involving a motorcycle authorities to close all northbound lanes of Interstate 880 in San Leandro.

Vehicles were being diverted off of the freeway at the Davis Street exit following the accident, which was reported shortly after 4 p.m. The accident spurred lengthy traffic back-ups on I-880 during the heart of the afternoon rush hour commute.

All lanes of I-880 in San Leandro reopened Tuesday around 6:15 p.m. after that fatal collision, the CHP said.

The California Highway Patrol said a motorcycle collided with a blue sport utility vehicle although it was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

An off-duty nurse at the scene tried to perform emergency medical care but said the motorcycle rider had no pulse. The victim's identity was pending.  

CHP officials did not say how long the northbound lanes would be closed. Motorists were urged to avoid the area.
