- Use an electronic ticket whenever possible to save on paper-ticket fees.
- Pack smart. Make sure your bags adhere to the airline’s size and weight requirements, and know that if you check a third bag, you’ll probably have to pay extra.
- Make yourself aware of your airline’s ticket change fee. Many policies have recently changed (as of the beginning of this year.)
- At your hotel, check on the costs of services in advance -- such as telephones, mini-bars, and fitness centers.
- Use cell phones or pay phones instead of your hotel phone.
- Always read the room-service bill before tipping the delivery person (the tip may already be included.)
- Always ask about (and fully understand) the cancellation policy, whether it’s for your vacation or just your hotel stay.
- Ask your travel agent for a complete list of fees when they quote you an itinerary. In many cases, an agent’s fee can by applied toward the cost of your trip if you book.
- When renting a car, find out if there’s a transportation fee, concession fee or airport tax. It might be a good idea to take a shuttle and rent from an off-site location.
- On a cruise, ask about the gratuity policy before booking.
- Consider taking a subway or train instead of renting a car.
- Hotels frequently offer a fourth or fifth night free (prevalent in Hawaii and Mexico), so be sure to check with these hotels first when researching your vacation. Usually these deals are offered on hotel Web sites or known to travel agents.
