  1. Do wash your hands frequently and before eating.
  2. Do make sure dishes and utensils are clean and dry before using them.
  3. Do drink bottled water, and in places other than the United States and Europe, brush your teeth with it.
  4. Don’t open your mouth while taking a shower.
  5. Do bring a ribbon with you to tie on your hotel room’s faucet, to remind you not to drink or brush your teeth with the water.
  6. Do boil water for five to 10 minutes if you need to use local water.
  7. Don’t eat salads, raw vegetables and fruit, unless you peel the fruit (bananas and oranges are good).
  8. Do enjoy beverages such as bottled soda, beer or wine in their original containers as long as you open the can or bottle yourself. Be sure to carefully wipe off any can or bottle before drinking or pouring.
  9. Do drink coffee or hot tea, but make sure it’s made from boiling water and served steaming hot.
  10. Don’t put ice in a mixed drink or in your soda.
  11. Do eat food that has been boiled or fried.
  12. Don’t buy food from a street vendor outside of the United States.
  13. Do look for dry foods like breads and cereals, and food with high sugar content -- like jelly -- for a safe alternative that will fill you up.
