Europe

Flights to Europe aren’t nearly as crowded at this time of year. And when you’ve got eight hours or more to fly, it’s nice to have some extra room. Try to travel on an off-peak day of Thanksgiving week, then enjoy the old world.

In London, don’t miss the Thames River cruise, which is a great orientation to the city if you’ve never been there. Afterward, visit the Tower of London or St. Paul’s Cathedral.

In Paris, you can find restaurants that serve a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner. Check with your hotel concierge, and make reservations in advance. Remember, over there, it’s a regular Thursday, so the historical and cultural spots will be open!

In Amsterdam, there’s always a celebration. Check with your hotel to confirm events during American Thanksgiving.

Mexico

The multitudes of resorts in Mexico are looking for business in November, so it’s a great time to take advantage of lower prices and fewer people.

In Cancun this year, the Hilton Cancun Beach and Golf Resort will host a four-day event called Cancun in Lights, just steps from the ocean, featuring a number of famous musical acts.

Canada

From Vancouver to Montreal, Thursday, Nov. 25, is just like any other Thursday. Plus, when you go to Canada, your money is worth more.

Wondering which Canadian city is right for you? Remember, Vancouver is much like Seattle, Calgary is similar to Dallas, Toronto is like New York City, and Montreal is very cosmopolitan, like Paris.

A few other Thanksgiving travel tips:

  • Book your flight on a slower travel day. Avoid Wednesday and Sunday. Take a little longer vacation and depart on Sunday or Monday (Nov. 21 or 22) and return Friday or Saturday (Nov. 26 or 27).
  • Some people celebrate Christmas at Thanksgiving with extended family. You can’t bring wrapped gifts through security, so ship those presents ahead to save yourself some time and sanity.
  • Allow sufficient time. During the busy holidays, anticipate possible slowdowns caused by heavy traffic, crowded airport parking lots, and busy ticket counters and security checkpoints.
