Cold-Weather Travel Requires Packing Skills

Posted: 9:27 am PST November 12, 2004Updated: 11:56 am PDT September 23, 2005

Packing for a trip to the sun is quite different from packing for a trip skiing, or just to go home to visit your family. So how do you avoid having to lug enormous suitcases through the airport when the weather calls for lots of insulation? Here are a few tips.

  • Choose an outfit for each day of your trip. Ask yourself what activities you’ll be doing each day. It’s OK to wear the same pair of pants twice, but plan on darker colors to disguise any dirt.
  • Try to choose clothes that are members of the same color family. For example, focus on black pants, black tops, black shoes or boots. Then select a few complementary colors. They will all mix and match.
  • Always look for garments that layer well for warmth. Many fabrics are made specifically for insulation, but also look great when worn alone. Find items that do double-duty for you.
  • If you’re going to be in a place where your clothes could get wet (like skiing or making snow forts with your family), be sure to have some water-resistant or fast-drying outerwear. These items can be washed out in a sink and will drip dry quickly.
  • Choose one coat and one coat only. If you’re going skiing, it should be your ski jacket. If you’re going home for family activities, make sure it’s versatile. Wear it on the airplane.
  • Don’t forget those zipper bags. Bring a few large and a few small ones. They’ll hold your wet boots or gloves for the trip home.
  • Expect the unexpected. You might think your ski resort will be all sweaters and fireplaces, but they’ll probably have a Jacuzzi, too. Don’t forget your suit so you can relax after all that hard work on the slopes.
  • Pack smart. Roll your clothes, or pack them in zipper bags. Put socks inside of shoes and use every little corner.
