New Vacation Trend Lets Travelers Give Back While Getting Away

It's the time of year when many Americans head to the Caribbean, Mexico or Hawaii for sand and sun.

But a new vacation trend has travelers giving back while getting away -- and making a difference by helping those in need.

They're called the Volunteer Vacationers and, at last count, there were 50 million worldwide who use their vacations to help those less fortunate. They do so with the help of various corporate sponsors.

For example, a group recently traveled to Buenos Aires to bring new beds to a home for disabled children.

More than just furniture, the beds created a bond between those in need and those who came to help.

On the same trip, volunteers also handed out toys at children's hospitals, brought clothing to soup kitchens and distributed wheelchairs to people who had previously been immobile.

Past missions include:
  • Helping with earthquake relief in El Salvador
  • Bringing toys, clothes and medical supplies to children in Bolivia
  • Delivering wheelchairs to disabled people in Ecuador
  • Taking supplies to orphanages in the Dominican Republic
