Oakland School Closures

With limited resources and under-enrolled students in various elementary schools, the Oakland Unified School District’s Board of Education will make a difficult decision on closing down  five elementary schools and in restructuring other public schools. Vice President and board member, Jumoke Hinton Hodge, will discuss some of the decisions the Board is faced with as they meet their Oct. 26^th deadline.

Barber of Birmingham

Photographer turned filmmaker, Robin Fryday, joins us in the studio to talk about her first film, “The Barber of Birmingham.”  The documentary captures the life of James Armstrong, an 85-year old barber and Civil Rights Activist as he anticipates the inauguration of Barack Obama in becoming the first African-American president of the United States. Shirley Gavin Floyd, representing the Civil Rights Activist Committee Foot Soldiers of Birmingham, Alabama, also shares insight into Armstrong’s long time activism during the fight for civil rights in the South. The film will be screened this weekend at the Mill Valley Film Festival.
