Sleep, Memory and Age

UC Berkeley neuroscientists have found a connection between poor sleep, memory loss and aging. They conducted a study that slow brain waves generated during the deep sleep plays a role and how much we are able to store in memory.  Their discovery opens doors to boosting the quality of sleep in elderly people to improve memory.

Surviving Spouses Group

Verna Rose Kelsey was married to a 25 year veteran of the Oakland Police Department. After 36 years of marriage, her husband died from ALS.  Kelsey went into a deep depression but soon realized that she wasn’t the only widow that needed grief support. In 2007, with the support of the Oakland Police Department, Kelsey founded the Surviving Spouses Group.

The Great Bay Area Service Day for Schools

St. Mary’s College, KTVU and TV36 has joined together in volunteering to help spruce up 22 Bay Area schools. On Saturday, March 16th,  lot of elbow grease will be used to help schools with general landscaping needs such as weeding, mulching and planting trees and flowers. Painting benches and playground  blacktops and helping out in classrooms are also on day’s agenda.   Through St. Mary’s CILSA program, this one day of service will have hundreds of volunteers fan out to schools in 6 counties: Marin , Contra Costa County, San Francisco, Alameda and San Mateo.
