Herman Cain’s personal behavior is again in the spotlight, as a woman from Georgia has accused the Republican Presidential hopeful of carrying on a 13-year affair with her.
The story was laid out by the Fox TV affiliate in Atlanta, which not only had an interview with Ginger White, but also access to what she said was cell phone evidence of her extensive contacts with Cain.
And when the station used her cell phone to text Cain, he called right back.
Even before the story made air, Cain was on CNN denying anything improper.
“I can take the lumps,” Cain said on CNN as he denied any kind of sexual relationship.
“I expected this kind of stuff when I decided to run for President of the United States of America,” Cain told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
But while Cain denied any relationship, his attorney issued a statement that sounded like a classic non-denial denial.
“This appears to be an accusation of private, alleged consensual conduct between adults — a subject matter which is not a proper subject of inquiry by the media or the public,” said attorney Lin Wood in a statement.
The latest story emerged as Cain continued his unorthodox push for the Republican nomination, just five weeks before the Iowa Caucuses.
Cain was in the Washington, D.C. area for a fundraiser on Monday night, while Newt Gingrich was kicking off a three day campaign swing in South Carolina.
Today, instead of campaigning in one of the four states that vote in January – Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or Florida – Cain is in Michigan, which votes on February 28, and in Ohio on Wednesday, which holds a primary on June 12.
On Thursday, Cain will be in Tennessee, which votes on Super Tuesday March 6.
Some might observe that the nomination for the Republicans will not be won in Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee in coming weeks – but Cain hopes to prove them wrong.
Iowa is five weeks from today.
